How to Use DNS Monitor in Sparkle

Updated yesterday

Sparkle’s DNS Monitor helps you track the health and security of your domains or IP addresses in real time.It checks critical DNS records (like SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and MX) to ensure your email authentication is strong and your deliverability stays high. You’ll also get alerts if your domain or IP appears on any blacklist or if your health score drops.

By catching issues early, you can avoid spam folder placement and protect your sender reputation.Use DNS Monitor to stay proactive, not reactive, about your domain health.

Step 1: Start by Adding a Domain or IP

Click on Add IP/Domain on the DNS Monitor dashboard.

You can enter either:

  • Domain (e.g., example.com)

  • IP address (e.g., 192.0.2.1)

Step 2: Enter Domain/IP Details and (Optional) Set Recurring Checks

  • Domain/IP: Enter your domain or IP address (one per line if adding multiple).

  • Group Name: Add a group name to organize your entries (optional).

  • Enable Recurring Check: This is optional. If enabled, you can automate monitoring.

  • Monitoring Frequency: Once "Enable Recurring Check" is selected, choose how often Sparkle should run checks:

    • Every day

    • Every 3 days

    • Every 7 days

    • Every 30 days.

Step 3: Set Up Optional Alerts

(Optional but highly recommended)

  • Select action group: Choose which group should receive alert notifications.

  • Select alerts to receive:

    • Health score drops below a set threshold (e.g., 90%)

    • Authentication failures (SPF, DKIM, DMARC issues)

    • IP/Domain appears on blacklists

  • Customized message: Add any specific message you'd like included in alerts for context.

Step 4: Run the Test

  • Click Run Test to start monitoring. You can also click Cancel to exit without saving.

Step 5: Monitor Status and Results

After starting, your domain or IP will appear on the main DNS monitoring dashboard:

  • Avg Health Score: Shows overall health trend over time.

  • Blacklist status: Confirms if your domain/IP is clean.

  • DNS record statuses: Displays DMARC, SPF, DKIM, and MX record health.

  • Status: Indicates current progress (e.g., "In Progress").

Pro Tips for Using DNS Monitor in Sparkle

  • Set up recurring checks for critical domains. Even if you check manually now, enabling scheduled checks helps you catch sudden issues without needing to remember.

  • Use action groups wisely. Assign alerts to the right teams (e.g., IT or deliverability team) so they can act fast when something goes wrong.

  • Keep an eye on authentication records. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC failures are common causes of emails landing in spam — monitor these closely.

  • Check blacklist status regularly. A sudden listing can tank your email deliverability and reputation; immediate action helps limit damage.

  • Leverage groups to stay organized. Grouping domains by brand, product line, or region makes tracking easier as your list grows.
